Chilliwack gymnasts shine on national stage in Gatineau

All four athletes earned medals at the event

It was a successful showing on the national stage for a handful of Chilliwack athletes at the beginning of the month.

Four local gymnasts were in Gatineau, Que., representing B.C. for the Artistic Gymnastics Championships from June 5-9.

Chilliwack’s Zach Clay headlined the group winning a silver medal in the pommel horse. Clay is also a member of the World Championship men’s team who have successfully qualified for the upcoming Olympic Summer Games in Paris. The official roster has yet to be announced.

Joshua Carroll was next up, competing in the Senior Next Gen category where he was awarded a silver medal for his routine on the parallel bars.

Fourteen-year-old Nicholas Hajiadam was Chilliwack’s youngest competitor, competing in the Aspire 13-14 category where he placed fifth in the all-around and finished with a stellar vault, resulting in a silver medal to close out the weekend.

The only local woman to compete was Sardis Secondary student Amélie Shea. The 15-year-old was the top provincial athlete competing in the Canadian Competitive Program 10 Jr. category. The Chilliwack product placed fifth in the all-around, helping her team earn a silver medal.

The three men all train at the Twisters Gymnastics facility out of Abbotsford, with Shea being the lone athlete out of Langley Gymnastics where she trains upwards of 25 hours a week.
