A wind advisory was issued for the eastern Fraser Valley Monday afternoon, after fierce winds whipped through Chilliwack, Agassiz and Hope.
Environment Canada issued a warning for winds up to 100 km/h for the Fraser Canyon and eastern Fraser Valley, at 3:42 p.m. Dec. 15.
They noted that strong winds that may cause damage were expected.
Winds moved into the region earlier in the day, causing havoc on the roads. By 4 p.m., emergency crews were dealing with multiple calls, including one involving serious injury.
Then at 4:30 p.m., someone had reported a live power line had come down in a homeless encampment.
At least one tree also landed on a railway line near Orchard Road in Chilliwack, causing a temporary shutdown while it was investigated.
Power outages were also affecting some neighbourhoods and intersection lights.
Environment Canada said the winds are from a strong low pressure system moving across southern B.C. early this evening, “likely bringing gusts of 90-100 km/h to the eastern Fraser Valley and into the Fraser Canyon.
At the time of the advisory being issued, the winds were expected to weaken by late evening. However, they had already done a lot of damage. By 4:30 p.m. in Hope, there were up to 10 separate power outages. Across the Lower Mainland, more than 42,000 customers were without power.
