The Yarrow/Chilliwack chapter of Cycling Without Age is ready to launch its sixth season with a special Mother’s Day event.

Their aim is to get seniors and people mobility challenges out in the fresh air, with the wind in their hair riding around in a comfy, pedal-powered bike called a “trishaw.”

The 2024 season launch is set for Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Peach Road entrance of the Vedder Rotary Trail.

“We hope this will provide an opportunity to showcase our program and continue to expand our reach,” said group member David Burdge. “There are so many socially isolated elders and this is such a simple and beautiful way to help them get out and have more social interactions.”

They’ll be ready for short jaunts.

“Our volunteer pilots will be on location with our elegant trishaws tuned up and ready to take a favourite senior or two on short rides along the trail.”

Founded in 2012 by Ole Kassow in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Cycling Without Age movement has 3,050 chapters in 39 countries, with 13 chapters in B.C., and 42 across Canada.

At the May 12 event there will be info available about how to volunteer, get trained as a “pilot” and how to connect isolated seniors and other folks with mobility challenges to the program.
