Fraser Valley event included displays of past, present military vehicles and artillery

More than 100 people came out to honour veterans during a fundraiser in Abbotsford on Saturday.

The Canadian Walk for Veterans returned to the Fraser Valley on Sept. 23 at Mill Lake Park.

“Our primary goal is to provide Canadians the opportunity to learn about the challenges faced by those who serve our country, to celebrate their contributions, and express gratitude for the sacrifices they make on our behalf,” said Marc Burchell, founder and national organizer.

The fundraiser is held annually across Canada and invites communities to walk shoulder to shoulder in recognition and celebration of serving military and veterans.

The local event in Abbotsford included displays of past and present military vehicles and artillery. Music was provided by the 15th Field Artillery Regiment brass quintet, and several local, provincial and federal dignitaries were in attendance.

The theme for this year’s event was Heroes of the Homefront, recognizing the contributions made by military families in enhancing the well-being of military personnel and veterans, particularly those with service-related health conditions.

Net proceeds from the Fraser Valley walk go to the Mainland BC Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC). MFRCs are the heart of their military communities and work to build strong, resilient individuals and families.
