Diversity floods halls of Chilliwack Secondary School for Cultural Day

Cultural foods and performances headlined the second annual student-run event

Diversity was paraded proudly through the halls of a Chilliwack high school last Friday.

Chilliwack Secondary School hosted its second annual student-run Cultural Day on May 3.

Some 1,500 students flooded the halls for an extended lunch break with many sporting cultural attire while enjoying performances and cultural dance routines.

“It’s a day where you can be comfortable being who you are…you get to flex your culture,” said event organizer Saanvi Dembla, a Grade 11 student.

A Mendhi booth was also set up where students could use the photo booth and receive henna tattoos.

Cultural foods were also available for students with samosas and spring rolls headlining the way.

The event was put on by the Students of Colour Association with help from the school’s leadership program and the student council.

“We have so much culture here. We have Indian, Mexican and Japanese students,” said Dembla.

School principal Danielle Wicker was full of praise for Dembla and the rest of her students who helped organize the event.

“This is all them. They’ve been working really hard on it and it was so much fun last year,” said Wicker.

“It’s about creating a space where students can be comfortable showing who they are and being themselves. That’s what it’s all about, right?”
