More eco-friendly forms of public transit, including ‘e-buses,’ will soon be coming to Chilliwack.

Chilliwack is one of eight B.C. communities that can expect transit electrification projects to develop over the next two years said BC Transit in an announcement Monday morning (May 6).

BC Transit also stated 66 e-buses are already on order and expected to arrive incrementally in early-2025 to mid-2026, with plans to procure more as the project progresses.

Approximately 134 charging stations are going be installed over the period of the project in Chilliwack, as well the other communities which include Kamloops and Kelowna.

Bus allocation is still not yet confirmed.

“Electrification of our fleet is a significant part of our plan to reduce GHG emissions and ensure a cleaner and healthier future for everyone,” said Erinn Pinkerton, president and chief executive officer of BC Transit.

“With other active procurements underway and work advancing on charging infrastructure designs in communities, it’s an exciting time for BC Transit and our partners.”

The total $395.5 million funding for the project was announced in July 2023 and is a cost shared with the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia and local government partners.

Funding from the government is being provided through the Zero Emission Transit Fund and the Public Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
